Cardoso has been approved by the Senate as the new governor of the CBN, along with four deputies

The Senate of Nigeria has selected Doctor Olayemi Michael Cardoso as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and four new deputy governors. They were approved on Tuesday, following a screening by the upper legislative body.

On September 15, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented Cardoso with a nomination to serve as governor of the CBN.

Cardoso was sworn in as the acting governor of the CBN on Friday, awaiting confirmation by the Senate. The Deputy Governors-Designate were also functioning in their roles.

Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, Mrs. Aishah Ahmad, Mr. Edward Lametek Adamu, and Dr. Kingsley Obiora have been appointed as the next Deputy Governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Cardoso is an Economic and Development Policy Advisor, a Financial Sector Leader, the former Chairman of Citi Nigeria, and the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget for the city of Lagos. He has more than 30 years of experience working in executive positions.

He attended Aston University in Birmingham, United Kingdom, to study business and administration.

The incoming governor of the CBN was presented with a Master of Public Administration degree from the Harvard Kennedy School in the United States.
