Communications Minister orders deactivation of voicemail on existing lines

The Honourable Minister of Communications & Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami), has odered the deactivation of voicemail on lines of existing GSM users in the country.

The minister said Nigerians are being exploited by mobile network operators using the automatic activation of the voicemail service on their platforms.

Pantami, who spoke through a statement issued on Thursday by his spokesperson, Uwa Suleiman, directed the Nigeria Communications Commission, the regulator of the sector, to ensure immediate compliance by the service providers. The directive was a continuation of the ongoing campaign by the minister against perceived telecom operators ’ exploitative practices.

He recently ordered the NCC to stop the service providers suspected illegal deduction of subscriber data.

NCC was also directed to ensure that the country’s telecom operators reduced the rates charged for data.
