A Federal High Court in Lagos let Mr. Godwin Emefiele out on bail today (Tuesday). He was the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), but he was put on leave.
He was given bail of N20 million and a guarantee of the same amount.
The Department of State Services, DSS, had brought two counts of illegal holding of a gun against him. This led to the bail being set.
Emefiele had been in the care of DSS for more than a month.
Emefiele’s lawyer, Mr. Joseph Daudu, SAN, asked for his release after his client pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.
Daudu said that Emefiele’s crime is one that can be bailed out of jail.
At 9:23 a.m., a white Hilux pick-up van with its license plates hidden drove Emefiele to court.
Emefiele got out of the van at the court with the help of a woman whose name could not be confirmed at press time.
Then he was taken to Justice Nicolas Oweibo’s hearing, who was the judge in charge of the case.
