Following a disappointing run of results, Sevilla fires Alonso

On Saturday, Sevilla fired coach Diego Alonso in response to their dreadful form, which has dropped them to sixteenth place in La Liga.

The Uruguayan was terminated following Getafe’s 3-0 home loss.

“Sevilla declares Diego Alonso’s dismissal,” the club read in a statement.

Since his appointment on October 10, Alonso has been unable to register a victory in either the Champions League or the Spanish League.

Under Alonso’s leadership, Sevilla finished lowest in their Champions League group with three defeats and five draws in eight La Liga contests.

Both of the 48-year-old’s sole victories came against lower-league opponents in the Copa del Rey.

Alonso had taken over for Jose Luis Mendilibar, who in May guided the group to an unprecedented seventh Europa League title.
