March 8th has been recognized around the world as a day dedicated to celebrating women for more than a century. Women in the textile industry in New York City began protesting their working conditions and lack of legal protections on March 8, 1857. The strike was one of the earliest examples of organized labor action by women, who demanded pay equity and shorter work weeks.
Many Chinese women, like their counterparts in other countries, get a half day off to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8.
This year’s theme, “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality,” highlights the role of innovative technology in promoting gender equality and meeting the health and developmental needs of women and girls.
