Sunday at Saint James Park, Newcastle overcame a one-goal deficit to defeat Southampton 3-1 and maintain their third-place position in the Premier League table.
Stuart Armstrong scored the first goal for the Saints just before halftime.
Substitute Callum Wilson scored two goals for the Georgies, and unfortunate Theo Walcott scored an own goal to seal Castle’s victory.
They have a two-point advantage over Manchester United, although United have two games in hand.
Six points separate Southampton from safety, and their next match will be against relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest.
