The organizers of the MTV EMA have declared Rema, a Nigerian vocalist, the recipient of the Best Afrobeat award. In contrast, Burnaboy, an Afrobeat man, is not nominated for any of the three awards—“Best Afrobeat,” “Best African Act,” or “Best Live Performer.”
The victors of the 2023 MTV EMA Awards were nonetheless declared on Sunday, November 5, 2023, despite the event’s cancellation. Among the recipients were Tanzanian vocalist Diamond Platnumz and Nigerian singer Rema, who were awarded the prestigious accolades for Best African Act and Best Afrobeats, respectively.
In the category, Rema emerged victorious over Asake, Aya Nakamura, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, and Davido, among others. At the MTV EMAs, the Best Afrobeats Award is being presented for the very first time.
At the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), Diamond Platnumz, a Tanzanian vocalist renowned for his hit singles “Number One,” “Kanyaga,” and “Unachezaje,” was honored with the prestigious Best African Act Award. In the category, he emerged victorious over Asake, Burna Boy, Libianca, and Tyler ICU, among other nominees.
Rema’s recent appearance at the Ballon D’or in France further crowned his phenomenal ascent within the Afrobeat genre.
