Thursday, remnants of demolished buildings in Kano city ensnared some scavengers at Daula Hotel and Eid Praying Ground, according to the Kano State Police.
SP. Abdullah Haruna Kiyawa, spokesman for the Kano State Police command, stated this in a statement.
According to reports, 106 suspected scavengers were arrested for committing the crimes of trespass, vandalism, and larceny.
He explained that despite multiple warnings from the Police Command, the scavengers continued to refuse to avoid these sites.
“Unfortunately, on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at approximately 2:30 p.m., it was reported that remnants of the demolished buildings collapsed and entrapped some scavengers at Daula Hotel and Eid Praying Ground,” he said.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police joined rescue workers from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and state government officials for a briefing on casualties with a high likelihood of death.
He expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a swift recovery.
He advised parents and community leaders to instruct their children and dependents to permanently avoid these sites.
