UNICAL will get back the list of students sent to Law School

The managers of the University of Calabar may soon bring back lists of students who were sent to the Nigerian Law School in the last two years so that they can be properly checked.

This comes after strong claims that Prof. Cyril Ndifon, the former dean of the Faculty of Law at the university, who was suspended last week because of sex scandals, tampered with the lists by giving preference to female students he slept with.

Prof. Florence Obi, the Vice Chancellor of the University, said this when she spoke to the press about allegations that Ndifon sexually assaulted female students and didn’t usually follow the rules, passing qualified students except for those who gave in to his inappropriate advances.

Remember that a few days ago, female law students held public protests with signs calling for Prof. Ndifon to be fired because they said he was always groping them.

In the wake of the scandal, the Vice Chancellor said that the Faculty of Law needed to be changed. This was because the dean was accused of being overbearing, sexually assaulting students, acting like a dictator, and pushing other key academic staff to the side.

“Management and the staff agreed that the faculty needed some basic changes to stop the Dean of the Faculty of Law from having too much power and influence over the students,” she said.

The VC also listed other steps to be taken, such as setting up a committee to help students get to Law School, reviewing the list of students sent to Law School and possibly taking it back, removing the two exam officers from their jobs, and creating a Result Vetting Committee.

Other steps to be taken include setting up a Students’ Project Committee to assign project supervisors to undergraduates, setting up an Admission Committee to review Direct Entry admissions, setting up a committee to update the existing Standard Operations Procedure (SOP) of the university to take into account the special needs of the Faculty of Law, and appointing a new sub-dean.

A new interim chairman of the Faculty’s Post-Graduate School Board and the creation of a committee to review and assign classes for the semester in line with the university’s Quality Assurance procedure are also being thought about.

The university’s leaders also told the dean and the sub-dean to give the Director of Quality Assurance all result scripts, question papers, marking guides, and test attendance lists from the last two sessions.

Prof. Obi also told a group to look into claims that Ndifon had extorted money from students under different subheads. If Ndifon was found to be guilty, Prof. Obi said, he should have to pay back all the illegal money he had taken from students.
